Los Angeles - Sophomore Raquel Kops-Jones, currently ranked 26th in the country, advanced to the final qualifying round yesterday at the ITA Rivera All-American championships in Los Angeles, CA.
The third seeded Kops-Jones slipped early Michigan's Kavitha Tipenini, dropping the first set 5-7. However, she rallied to ultimately advance, winning the final two sets 6-3 and 6-4.
Kops-Jones then went on to defeat Jessica Roland of Texas A&M in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 to advance to today's round of play.
Katherine Lynch, who had eanred a bearth in the qualifying rounds through the prequalifiers over the weekend, fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to the fifth-seeded Sarah Borwell of Houston.
Christina Fusano also took part, but was eliminated 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 by Saras Arasu.
First and second round qualifying singles matches took place yesterday and the winners must win one more round today to advance to the Oct. 11-14 main draw. The Riviera Women's All-American Championships are the first of three national collegiate tennis championships this 2001-02 season. This event, the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events (for singles and doubles) during the season for Division I men and women (the ITA Men's All-American Championships are taking place in Stone Mountain, Ga., this week).
Cal did not have any entries in the doubles portion of the tournament.
