Post Game Quotes: Jan. 6 vs ASU
Jan. 6, 2011
Head coach Joanne Boyle
"I am just happy about the win. We've been talking about competing against teams. [The Cal team] really got the message. Not that we played a perfect game, but I felt our team was back. That is us. I saw our identity forming. Everything. Rebounding. Effort. Intensity. Everybody participated. It's been awhile since we have seen that. That was nice to see."
On what the team did to get back to this level of play
"We just competed at practice. It was maul ball. Well, not exactly that, but it was a competitive get-after-it, earn-playing-time, make-each-other-better sore of play. The light bulb had to go off. Now it is, can we do it day in and day out? That is the question. This was a nice starting point.
On the keys to winning the game
"You have to withstand their pressure defense and you have to board against them. They weren't shooting the ball great this year, but they were outrebounding people by nine, so we knew going in those were the two keys. You had to get in your mindset that you were going to have to attack the basket. Lay did a good job of that. Dee did a good job attacking from the post position. She did a great job on the boards, getting second chance points. It is one of those games you are always going to have to grind out. You can't check out. I thought we did a good job with that."
On upcoming game against Arizona
"Closing out this weekend is important. I don't think that having a game plan is the most important thing. I think it is them understanding this mentality and this approach to every game. The physicalness and the mental check in on every play is more important for us than necessarily what we are going to do against Arizona. They are a great team. They have had some good wins this year. I heard they played Stanford competitively. They are just as athletic, just in a different way. Great post game right now.
Sophomore guard Layshia Clarendon
On the mindset coming into the game
"You have to have the mindset that you aren't going to get any calls. You can't be making excuses that I got fouled and they are bumping me. You have to play at a high level where everything you do has to be sharp. We knew we had to match their intensity. From practice yesterday to shoot around today to our new warmup we had today, you could just feel the energy from everybody talking and everybody buying in."
