ATHENS, Ga. - California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova was selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) National Senior Player of the Year on Tuesday, May 22, as part of special luncheon and ceremony on the campus of the University of Georgia, in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Team Championships. Juricova became Cal's eighth regional Senior Player of the Year last week and is the program's second National Senior Player of the Year. Raquel Kops-Jones also won both the regional and national awards in 2004.
Each of the Golden Bears' regional award winners were honored during the luncheon including freshman Zsofi Susanyi who was selected as the Northwest Region's Rookie of the Year, and sophomore Anett Schutting who was tabbed as the region's Player to Watch. Associate Head Coach Cordell Ho also received recognition for his honors as the region's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Currently in the top 15 in both singles and doubles of the Campbell/ITA Division I Women's Rankings, eighth-ranked Juricova, is closing out a stellar four years in Berkeley. The Cal senior experienced one of the best seasons in the history of college tennis in her junior year, winning the 2011 NCAA Singles Championship en route to being named both the Campbell/ITA National Player of the Year and the 2011 Honda Sports Award Winner. She is also a three-time singles and two-time doubles ITA All-American honoree.
Juricova made an impact on college tennis immediately, teaming up with Mari Andersson to claim the 2009 NCAA Doubles Championship as a freshman. She also became the first ever USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Singles Champion in Cal program history. Known for her fierce competitive spirit on court, Juricova has amassed more the 150 singles victories and nearly 140 doubles victories in her career.
Juricova, Susanyi, and Schutting will be joined by juniors Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson as the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships begin on Wednesday, May 23, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
