All-Region Picks Ebert, Purdy Invited to MLS Combine

BERKELEY - California seniors Eric Ebert and Steve Purdy have been invited to the 2007 Major League Soccer Combine, the professional league announced today. Also, this week, Ebert and Purdy earned spots on the NSCAA Far West All-Region first team.

The annual MLS combine, which this year will feature 58 players from Division I colleges, will take place Jan. 5-8, 2007, at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The coaching staffs and general managers from all 13 teams will be in attendance to scout talent at the combine, which concludes four days before the MLS SuperDraft.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America also honored Ebert and Purdy with spots on its Far West All-Region first team. Cal teammates Javier Ayala-Hil, a junior forward, and Andrew Jacobson, a junior midfielder, earned spots on the NSCAA Far West All-Region second team.

Ebert, a 20-game starter this season, scored eight points (3 goals, 2 assists) and one game-winning goal, the latter coming in a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 8). The midfielder from Irvine, Calif., who tied Jacobson as Cal's fifth-leading scorer, also earned a spot on the All-Pac-10 first team this season. He was All-Pac-10 honorable mention in 2005.

The 6-4 Purdy, from San Jose, Calif., was Cal's second-leading scorer this season, with a career-high 12 points in 20 starts. An All-Pac-10 first-team selection in 2006, he was a member of the All-Pac-10 second team in 2005 and was and was all-conference honorable mention in 2004. This year, he has also scored a career-high five goals, including winners against San Jose State (Sept. 9) and Oregon State (Oct. 13) along with two assists. Cal's ironman was a fixture in the starting lineup, starting in 80 of the 82 games in which he played.

Another All-Pac-10 first-team pick this year, Ayala-Hil was Cal's leading scorer (26 points) and goalscorer (12). The East Palo Alto, Calif., product also scored a team-high five game-winning goals - against Dartmouth (2-1, Sept. 15), Sacramento State (2-0, Sept. 17), Washington (3-2, Oct. 15), UCLA (4-1, Oct. 29) and New Mexico (3-1, Nov. 15) - and notched a team-high 24 shots on goal this season.

Jacobson, who tallied three goals and two assists this season, is another All-Pac-10 first-team selection for 2006, when he started all 20 games for the Bears. From Palo Alto, Calif., Jacobson notched game-winning goals against UCLA (3-1, Sept. 22) and Washington (2-0, Oct. 8).
