The No. 6 California women's tennis team completed the second day of the 2008 Cal Winter Invitational with doubles wins against Nevada and taking five out of eight singles matches against No. 14 Fresno State today at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears are hosting three schools in the three-day round-robin tournament; Fresno State, No. 57 St. Mary's, and No. 66 Nevada. The Winter Invitational is the final tournament for the Bears before the team begins dual-match play on the road.
In singles play, freshman Marina Cossou defeated No. 11 Anastasia Petukhova in a hotly contested match that required a first-set tie-breaker. Winning the tie-breaker 7-5, Cossou entered the second set with enough steam to break Petukhova's serve to win 6-4 after initially falling behind 3-2. Senior No. 54 Cristina Visico took out the Bulldogs' No. 94 Renata Kucerkova after recovering from a 6-2 first-set loss. She eventually won the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Junior No. 31 Bojana Bobusic needed three sets also, but defeated Danon Beatty 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Senior Stephanie Kusano once again needed just 14 games to win her match, taking a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Vanessa Heroux.
In doubles play, the No. 36-ranked duo of senior Susie Babos and Kusano took the first game before falling behind 4-1 to Nevada's Caroling Bailly and Maria Mizyuk. On Kusano's serve, the Bears finally found a rhythm and got back on the scoreboard. Then Cal broke Bailly's serve in the seventh game to gain some momentum and took the eighth without giving up a single point to the Wolfpack duo. Nevada was able to break Kusano's serve in the tenth game to tie things up at five games apiece, but the Bears went on a tear from there, and claimed the final three games including a shutout break on Mizyuk's serve to close out the match with an 8-5 victory. Cossou and junior Claire Ilcinkas ran off with an 8-1 win and Bobusic and Visico had little trouble, notching an 8-3 victory.
The Bears resume play tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. in doubles matches against Fresno State. The Bulldogs have the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country when Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe take the court together. Following the doubles matches, Cal will lock up with St. Mary's in singles matches not beginning before 1:15 p.m. The Bear's have faced players from St. Mary's in several fall tournaments on an individual basis.
