BERKELEY - No. 17 California earned its seventh straight bid in the NCAA championships when the 48-team field was announced Monday afternoon. The Pac-10 champion Golden Bears, who earned an automatic bid after winning their second consecutive conference title, will host UC Davis in a first-round contest Friday, Nov. 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
This is Cal's 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which is also called the College Cup. Under head coach Kevin Grimes, a three-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year (2002, 2005 and 2006), Cal has amassed a 5-6-1 record in the postseason. Overall, the Bears have a 5-13-1 record in the national tournament.
This season, Cal boasts an impressive 7-1-1 record at Edwards Stadium, including winning their last six in a row at home.
The first-round appearance for the Aggies marks the first time a UC Davis team has qualified for an NCAA Division I tournament. The Aggies have currently won five of their last six games.
Including Cal, three Pac-10 teams are in the 2007 postseason field. UCLA (8-8-3, T2nd place in the Pac-10) squares off against New Mexico. Washington (8-7-4, 5th place in the Pac-10) hosts Portland in the first round.
The NCAA College Cup concludes with the semifinals on Dec. 14 and the final on Dec. 16 in Cary, North Carolina.
