SAN DIEGO - The No. 5 California women's water polo team narrowly dropped a 7-5 decision to No. 6 San Diego State on Thursday evening at the Aztec Aquaplex. Despite tying the game in the four period, Cal could not overpower the SDSU. Molly Hayes led all scorers with three goals. With the loss, the Golden Bears drop to 12-7 overall and 5-4 in the MPSF while the Aztecs improve to 22-2 and 6-1 in conference play, extending their winning streak to nine.
The Bears got on the board first thanks to a goal from sophomore defender Erin Scully, but the Aztecs went on a 3-0 scoring run to close out the first period. Cal opened the second stanza with a goal from senior defender Molly Hayes, 2.5 minutes into the period, to bring the score to 3-2. SDSU responded 22 seconds to distance itself, but Hayes struck again and California went into halftime down by one, 4-3.
Less than a minute had expired in the third period when Hayes scored her third goal of the game to even the game, 4-4. San Diego State's Ronni Gautschi notched the final goal of the quarter with 5:57 to play in the third to bring to score to 5-4 in favor of the home team. Sophomore two-meter Grace Reynolds tied the game at five with a goal a minute into the fourth period. Gautschi put one through again 30 seconds later to return the lead for good to her Aztecs. Danielle Pelke clinched the win for SDSU, scoring with 1:37 to play in regulation.
The Bears will host a nonconference slate Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex with Brown at 10 a.m. and No. 14 Hartwick at 4 p.m.
