BERKELEY, CALIF. - University of California sophomore standout and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian has been selected second-team District 8 All-Academic, it was announced Thursday, May 21 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida). Adrian (3.58 undeclared), who earlier was named the 2009 Pacific-10 Conference Swimmer of the Year, was also one of seven Golden Bear men swimmers selected first-team Pac-10 All-Academic.
A 2008 Olympic gold medalist as a member of the United States' 400-meter freestyle relay team, Adrian gave Cal its first national title in the 50 free since 2000, touching in at an American record time of 18.71 at the 2009 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. He won his second NCAA individual event in the 100 free, setting another American record with a time of 41.08. Adrian was a member of the Bears' 200 medley relay team which finished second in an NCAA-record time of 1:22.50 as well.
At the conference championships in Long Beach, Calif., Adrian was named the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Meet after claiming the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle titles. The Bremerton, Wash., native also swam the freestyle leg of the Bears' 400 medley relay team which won the Pac-10 title in a then-NCAA record time of 3:03.30.
The Bears, under the direction of second year head coach David Durden, finished fourth at the NCAA championships (350 points) for the second year in a row. Auburn won the 2009 NCAA meet with 526 points, followed by Texas (487) and Stanford (460.5).
