STOCKTON, CA - The No. 1 ranked University of California women's water polo team (26-5) fell to No. 4 ranked Stanford (20-5), 4-3, Sunday in the championship match of the Northern California Regional Qualifier in Stockton.

Despite losing to the Cardinal in the regional tournament, Cal, which captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament Apr. 11, will still be one of the top seeded teams at the National Collegiate Championship May 7-9 in Davis, CA.

In the championship match of Northern California Regional Qualifier, Stanford jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period. It was a dogfight after that as neither team scored in the second and third period. The Bears were able to outscore the Cardinal, 2-1, in the final period, but it was not enough as Stanford's Anne-Marie Keenan's goal in the fourth period was the difference in the match.

Junior Colette Glinkowski was Cal's leading scorer with two goals, and sophomore Amy Buehler added the other goal for the Bears.

Senior captains Erin Kelley and Melanie vonHartitzsch, plus junior Heather Petri, were selected to the First Team All Regional Qualification team.
