BERKELEY, CA - The No. 4-ranked women's water polo team dismantled a weaker Brown team today at the Spieker Aquatics Complex, as eleven players went on to score in the Bears' 16-2 victory.
Cal got on the board early, scoring on their second possession of the first quarter on a counter attack. Junior Brenna Fleener notched the assist, as junior two-meter player Julia Cesnik scored the goal. Fleener was the next Bear to find the cage, as she stole a Brown pass and took it the length of the pool for the score. Cal's defensive pressure remained consistent, as freshman Ericka Lorenz stole another Brown pass, which then was accurately passed to two Bears before Irwin notched the first of her team-leading three goals on the day. Lorenz tallied her first of two goals on a 4-meter penalty shot with 3:05 left in the first. After Irwin scored her second goal with 2:25 left in the first, putting the Bears up 5-0, Cal put in a new group of six field players. Junior Chris Lane and junior Amy Buehler scored goals for Cal, putting the Bears up 7-0 at the end of the quarter. Senior goalie Fana Fuqua, who tallied four saves in the quarter, had no trouble as Cal's defensive pressure forced the Brown players to take low-percentage shots from beyond the 4-meter mark.
For the rest of the game, Cal was in cruise control as eleven players tallied at least one goal in the game. The second quarter saw three Bears score, including two from junior Shelly Johnston. Two-meter freshman Lindy Spieker scored her first goal as a Golden Bear with 6 seconds remaining in the half after the Brown defenders starting swimming down to set up their counter attack. Cal still had the possession, however, and opted not to dump the ball. Spieker gained inside position on the Brown defender in front of the cage and put the ball away, giving Cal a comfortable 11-1 lead at the half. In addition, sophomore Courtney Devenish, sophomore Sarah Howell and junior Shelly Johnston each tallied their first goals of the season today. Brown's only goal of the first half came with 40 seconds left on a shot from junior Noel Pacarro.
At the start of the second half, Cal returned its starters to the lineup and got on the board from Irwin who recorded her third hat trick of the season. Lorenz, who now leads all scorers with 18 goals on the year, tallied her second goal of the match with 4:34 after stealing another Brown turnover. Cal's second group of six field players were replaced with a third team of six, who came into the game maintaining Cal's defensive intensity, holding Brown to only one goal in the second half. Freshman goalie Lauren Dennis played the second half of the game, notching two saves and giving up a goal on a Brown man-up possession.
