BERKELEY - This October, California junior gymnastics Christian and Jean Monteclaro will leave behind their Blue & Gold to don the red, white, blue and yellow of the Philippines at the World Championships. The Golden Bears are the Philippines' sole representatives.

The 2011 World Championships will be held in Tokyo from Oct. 8-16 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

"I'm excited to be competing on the international stage with the best gymnasts in the world," Christian Monteclaro said. "We are confident that we have prepared enough to have a very good competition and a great experience. It's a tremendous honor and privilege for my brother and me to represent the Philippines."

The Monteclaro's father was born in the Philippines and the twin brothers competed at the country's national games this past summer to earn placement on the team.

"I am thrilled to be going and excited to be competing with the best gymnasts in the world," Jean Monteclaro said. "I am greatly honored and proud to be a representative of an entire nation."

Former Golden Bear Bryan del Castillo will accompany the Monteclaros to Japan, serving as their coach.
