BERKELEY, Calif. -
Cal head coach Joanne Boyle
"I thought it was a great game. I thought our kids were just warriors. UCLA is tough. They really change the game with their defense. I thought we did a really good job handling the pressure and just taking care of business down the stretch."
On rebounding from the loss at Stanford
"If anybody's been following us for three years, they're tough, they're tough-minded. They let things go easily; they move forward. They do that a lot easier than I do. I thought they did a great job making adjustments. I thought that people were really going to take advantage and do different things and double and things like that. I thought the post players did a great job of skipping the ball in the first half and our guards attacked and we got to the free throw line. We had a section there in the second half where we got really stale and stagnant with our posts, with them passing in the post and us not moving, but other than that, I thought we did a great job of learning from the Stanford game and moving forward.
"We took practice, and we worked on it. The kids bought into it. They're very unselfish. You give them a task at hand and say this is how you can move forward and become a better team, and they're all about it. The credit goes to them because they're the ones that have to go out there and do it."
On Natasha Vital's performances against UCLA
"It just must be her team. She must just like baby blue. She handles a lot of pressure. I said she made great decisions in the first half attacking the basket and sticking to her post player. She thrives off that."
Cal forward/center Ashley Walker
On moving past the Stanford loss
"No, we're pretty good at letting things go. At Cal, we talk about having two seasons, and we're starting the next half of our season. It's kind of like that [loss at Stanford] is always going to be part of us, but we're going to move on to the next team and the next team and the next team and just not let that stay with us."
UCLA head coach Kathy Olivier
On the keys to the game
"I thought they did a good job inside-out. They have obviously great post players. They're very explosive and get it done and press really hard. They're outside game is heavy. I thought Vital did a great job in the first half hitting the outside shots. It's very hard when a team gets you both ways. At home, I thought offensively we were just in a better flow."
On defending Devanei Hampton
"As far as Devanei goes, she's so explosive and so strong. We worked very hard all week at keeping her off the board. I thought we did a good job of that. She didn't get any o-boards."
