STOCKTON, CALIF. - Led by sophomore Michael Sharf's two goals, the No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (4-0) defeated No. 14 Pacific, 8-5, Saturday in a non-conference match at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton. Cal also utilized balanced scoring attack, as six other Golden Bears scored on the afternoon - juniors John Mann, Brian Bacharach, Brian Kinsel and Marty Matthies; sophomore Mike Hayes and true freshman Shea Buckner.

The two teams fought back-and-forth in the first half with the score tied, 4-4, after two periods. The Tigers had a chance to take the lead with 3:20 left in the second period, but the Bears' senior goalie, Nate Bennett, blocked a four-meter penalty shot attempt by Pacific's Dragan Bakic. Bennett finished the match with seven saves and added four steals.

Cal was able to control the match by outscoring the Tigers, 4-1, in the third and fourth periods for the final 8-5 margin. Bakic and Matt Mitchell scored two goals apiece for the Tigers. Buckner led the Bears with three steals and forced three Pacific ejections, while Matthies had a team-high five steals.
