STOCKTON, CALIF. - Led by sophomore Michael Sharf's two goals, the No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (4-0) defeated No. 14 Pacific, 8-5, Saturday in a non-conference match at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton. Cal also utilized balanced scoring attack, as six other Golden Bears scored on the afternoon - juniors John Mann, Brian Bacharach, Brian Kinsel and Marty Matthies; sophomore Mike Hayes and true freshman Shea Buckner.

The two teams fought back-and-forth in the first half with the score tied, 4-4, after two periods. The Tigers had a chance to take the lead with 3:20 left in the second period, but the Bears' senior goalie, Nate Bennett, blocked a four-meter penalty shot attempt by Pacific's Dragan Bakic. Bennett finished the match with seven saves and added four steals.

Buckner led the Bears with three steals and forced three Pacific ejections, while Matthies had a team-high five steals.
