Letter From Jeff Tedford
Sept. 4, 2002
Dear Cal Fans,
As a vital member of the Cal family, we certainly hope you took a moment to share in our opening victory over Baylor last weekend. We were extremely proud of how our young men responded to our first challenge of the 2002 season.
In recent months, many of you have contacted me-either in person or in correspondence-to ask how you can help support the football program. I cannot express to you how much I appreciate your loyalty and commitment to Cal football.
I do have one specific way you can help us on Game Day this Saturday, and throughout the home season. Part of our mission this year is to create a winning environment at Memorial Stadium. While we have great respect for the 120 years of football history here in Berkeley and want to the preserve the rich heritage of past successes at our school, we also believe it is critical that we establish some new traditions that can help turn around the program.
One of those new traditions is something we call, "The March to Victory." Before every home game, team buses drop off our players and coaches at the intersection of Stadium Rim Way and the Maxwell Family Field (formerly Kleeberger Field) parking lot. Our goal is to have two thousand people join us, with one thousand lining each side of a "human walkway" from Stadium Rim Way to the north entrance of Memorial Stadium.
The team buses will arrive at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, so we are asking you-and your family and friends-to form the line by no later than 1:10 p.m. This type of pre-game tradition has become famous at many major colleges and can really create a motivational edge for your team.
So, it is our hope that you will come out early on Saturday to tailgate in the Maxwell Family Field "Fun Zone" area and line up to support and motivate our players. We need each and every one of you for "The March to Victory"-so don't be late!
Thank you so much, and Go Bears!
