TEMPE, Ariz. - The Cal softball team improved to 7-1 on the season with a 2-0 victory over No. 19 Alabama and a 3-0 win over Georgia on the final day of the ASU Fiesta Bowl Tournament Sunday. The Bears went 5-1 in the three-day tournament, posting four shutouts in the six games.
In Sunday's first contest, Cal and Alabama battled through a scoreless tie for six innings. But in the top of the seventh, Cal's Holly Yost rapped a two-out single, bringing home Maiko Bristow and Megumi Takasaki for a 2-0 Bear lead. Freshman pitcher Jocelyn Forest closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh for her second victory of the year. Forest allowed just five hits and struck out 11 on the day.
In the second game, pitcher Nicole DiSalvio nearly had her second no-hitter of the season. DiSalvio, who tossed a perfect game in the season-opening 8-0 win over San Jose State, did not allow a Georgia base hit until two were out in the seventh inning. She finished with a one-hitter to up her record to 4-0 on the year.
Against the Bulldogs, the Bears offensive punch came from center fielder Amber Phillips, who hit her first career home run, a solo shot to lead off the second inning.
