Men's Golf Advances to Championships with 4th Place Finish at NCAA West Regional

TUCSON, Ariz. - The California men's golf team earned a trip to Chaska, Minn., and the 1999 NCAA Men's Golf Championship Saturday, with a fourth place finish in the NCAA West Regional at the Tucson National Golf Course. It is the second-straight bid and fourth of the decade for the Golden Bears, who also finished in fourth place at last year's West Regional.

Cal, which entered Saturday's third and final round in fifth, shot a combined 1-over-par 289 to finish at 10-over 874. Arizona State led the event wire-to-wire, winning the regional with a final total of 10-under 854. Defending NCAA Champion UNLV finished second at 2-under 862, with Brigham Young in third at even-par 864.

Junior Dong Yi (Alameda) was the Bears top individual, finishing the 54-hole tournament tied for fourth at 3-under 213 after a final round 71. Arizona State's Jeff Quinney (7-under 209) was the individual medalist.

Also shooting 1-under 71 during the third round was Cal junior Han Lee (Cerritos), who finished in a tie for 48th, up from 67th.

Senior Dan Coyle (Dundalk, Ireland) and junior Robert Hamilton (Sacramento) ended the regional tied for 20th and 27th, respectively, while senior Dan Arroyo (Walnut Creek), who carded a 73 Saturday, finished tied for 48th.

Also advancing to the 30-team NCAA Championship, which will be played June 2-5 at the Hazeltine National Golf Course, were San Diego State (875), Oregon (875), Washington (883), Colorado State (886) and Arizona (891).
