This Week:
Feb. 18 vs. No. 23 Washington
Berkeley, CA (Haas Pavilion) - 7:30 p.m.
WHAT'S ON TAP: Still in search of its first Pac-10 victory of 2005, the California women's gymnastics team hosts No. 23 Washington, Fri., Feb. 18. Both clubs are coming off of their lowest-scoring meets of the season and both the Bears and Huskies have suffered multiple losses since beginning their seasons 5-1 and 8-1, respectively. Meet time at Haas Pavilion is 7:30 p.m.

SCOUTING THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: In the past week, Washington has hit both ends of the scoring spectrum. On Feb. 11, the Huskies posted a season-high 195.275 but fell to No. 16 Oregon State (195.975) and No. 11 Arkansas (195.550). Two days later, Washington turned in its lowest score of the year in a 196.575-192.600 loss at No. 9 UCLA. The Huskies still post some of the most consistent marks in the nation, ranking 22nd on vault (48.675), 23rd on bars (48.362) and 24th on beam (48.242) and floor (48.583). Individually, senior Carly Dockendorf is tied for 16th nationally on floor (9.855), 26th in the all-around (39.112) and 28th on bars (9.812). Dockendorf is just one of four gymnasts to score a perfect 10 on floor this season. Cal is 5-23 all-time against the Huskies with Washington winning 195.850-193.600 in Seattle last season. Cal's last victory was in 2003, a 196.475-194.850 victory in Berkeley where the Bears posted a then-program record all-around score. Washington is coached by Bob Levesque (175-138-2, 15th year).

MEET IN REVIEW (2/11/05): Despite posting its lowest score of the year in a 195.550-181.450 loss to No. 22 Arizona State, the Bears still received some strong individual performances. Senior My-Lan Dodd finished fourth in the competition with a season-high score of 38.875. That mark included season-highs on vault (9.800), bars (9.875) and floor (9.825). It was the highest all-around mark for Dodd since posting a 39.150 at last year's NCAA Regionals (4/3) ... Cal had it's most successful night on vault this season (48.025) and two gymnasts besides Dodd set season-highs on the event - freshmen Siobhan Luce (9.550) and Nicki Wells (9.525) ... sophomore Isabel Garcia set a new season-high on floor of 9.700.

FIRST-YEAR IMPACT: With injuries cutting a swath through the Bears' lineup, Cal's four freshman competitors have been pressed into service in 2005, each to varying degrees of success. Luce, who began the season on three events, has graduated to the all-around and posted a season-high 38.050 at Arizona State. That score included career-highs on floor (9.700), vault (9.550) and beam (9.275). She has Cal's third-highest average on floor (9.555). Wells tied a season-high on vault (9.525) at Arizona State and has improved her all-around score in Cal's last three meets, topping out at 37.200. Alli Szutu took second in the all-around (38.700) in her first collegiate competition (Jan. 14) but complications have kept her in and out of the lineup. She competed in three events at ASU, scoring a 9.600 on vault and a 9.750 on bars. Keiko Nakamura has only competed on beam and has Cal's third-highest individual score of 2005 at 9.625.

INJURY UPDATE: Aside from sophomore Justine Cephus and freshman Alexandra Dillon, junior Britani Pittullo and Nakamura are also out for the year. Pittullo, who has suffered shoulder injuries in the past, is out with more complications. Nakamura has a meniscus injury and underwent an MRI Monday to determine the extent of the problem. Cephus and Dillon were sidelined before the year began.

HOME-MAT ADVANTAGE: For the first time in the structure's history, Haas Pavilion will play host to the 2005 Pac-10 Gymnastics Championships. The best in the west will convene in Berkeley, March 26 at 3 p.m.
