BERKELEY - Sophomore Devanei Hampton from the California women's basketball team is this week's Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week after a week which saw her earn Pac-10 Player of the Year honors as well as leading the Golden Bears to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament. She is Cal's first women's basketball Player of the Year in the conference and this year marked the furthest the Bears had advanced in the league tourney.
In all games in 2006-07, Hampton averaged 16.7 points (sixth in Pac-10) and 8.0 rebounds (third in Pac-10) per game. She registered 11 games with at least 20 points, including six outings with at least 25 points (twice tallying a career-high 27 points). Hampton tallied 22 points and a season-best 14 rebounds in the Bears' 72-57 triumph over No. 8 Stanford Feb. 4, snapping the Cardinal's 17-game winning streak and 50-game home Pac-10 winning stretch.
In the Pac-10 Tournament this past weekend in San Jose, the Oakland Tech product scored 21 points with nine rebounds in a defeat of Oregon to lift Cal into the conference semifinals. She followed that up with 21 more points and eight boards against No. 9 Arizona State, but it was not enough to lift the Bears. Hampton was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.
Despite the loss, California is expected to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Bids will be announced on Monday, March 12.
