LOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. - Cal senior attacker Cory Nasoff sent the match into overtime with a goal at 1:07 left in regulation, but Stanford's Alex Bowen scored with 42 seconds left in the second three-minute overtime period to give the Cardinal a 10-9 victory over the Golden Bears in the championship match of the SoCal Invitational Sunday (Oct. 2) at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.
Besides Nasoff's late match heroics, the Bears (11-2) were led by freshman Aleksa Saponjic's three goals, including two goals in the fourth period. The younger Saponjic, whose brother, Luka, is a senior on the squad, was instrumental in Cal's fourth quarter comeback. The Bears were down, 8-6, with a little more than four minutes left in the match when Aleksa Saponjic scored back-to-back goals and 2:49 and 2:15 remaining in the contest. Bowen pushed Stanford ahead, 9-8, at the 1:53 mark, before Nasoff's goal put the game into overtime.
Besides the scores from Nasoff and Aleksa Saponjic, senior Ivan Rackov added two goals and junior Marin Balarin and sophomores Hunter Gettelfinger and Collin Smith also found the net for Cal. Junior goalie Justin Parsons finished the match with nine saves and concluded the tournament with 39 blocks.
The Bears will next travel to UCLA, Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation league play. Cal then travels to Long Beach State for another MPSF match, Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m., before facing UC San Diego in a non-league match on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 12 p.m.
