No. 3 Cal Finishes Three Shots Out in Third at Longhorn Invite

AUSTIN, Texas - No. 3 California almost claimed its first tournament title of the spring, but in the end finished third Tuesday at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at The Hills Country Club. The Golden Bears carded a plus-18 306 in the final round, for a 54-hole score of plus-74 938.

No. 9 Vanderbilt began the day tied with Cal, six shots behind first-place Texas and five shots back from No. 22 UNLV. The Commodores carded a third-round low score of 303 to claim the crown by two shots over No. 19 Texas (935 to 937). The Longhorns posted a 311 Tuesday. No. 13 USC placed fourth at 941 (+77), and UNLV dropped to fifth at 950 (+86).

Cal sophomore Sophia Sheridan shot a minus-one 71 today on the strength of a hole in one on the par 3 14th hole. Sheridan, the only golfer to fire a score under par during the tournament, vaulted from a tie for 12th yesterday to a second-place showing at 228 (+12). The product of Guadalajara, Mexico, has placed second in two of the Bears' last three tournaments.

Vanderbilt's Chris Brady led wire-to-wire and concluded the 18-team tournament two shots ahead of Sheridan at 226 (+10).

Cal seniors Claire Dury and Sarah Huarte, along with sophomore Sofie Andersson, tied for 17th at 22-over-par 238. Dury started the day tied for 38th but improved after draining a 75 today. Dury and Sheridan each had a team-high three birdies over the final 18 holes. Senior Anna Temple tied for 29th at 241 (+25).

The Bears have their final preparation for the Pac-10 Championships Friday-Sunday, April 2-4, at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
