Sacramento - The California Golden Bears pounded out 12 hits en route to a 9-0 non-conference win at Sacramento State at Shea Stadium on Wednesday.
Cal (26-23) resumes conference play this weekend when it hosts Washington on Friday at 3 p.m. and UCLA on Saturday and Sunday (both games are slated for 1:00 p.m.). The Bears are 2-7 in Pac-10 play this season.
Gina Leomiti, Bernice Masaniai, and Taylor Kelly all produced two hits each for Cal. Masaniai also connected for a two-run home run in the fourth inning. It was her seventh home run of the season. Of Cal's 12 hits, three were doubles and one was a triple.
The Bears' offense started clicking in the third inning, generating four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Alex Sutton notched a one-out single and quickly moved to second after Erika Racklin punched an infield single. Two batters later Leomiti slapped a single to center field, plating Sutton. A few plays later Racklin stole home and scored, before Masaniai's home run over the left field wall further boosted the Cal lead.
The score remained 4-0 until the sixth inning when the Bears added three more runs in the frame. With Kelly and Sutton on third and second respectively, Carly Winger delivered a double to center field to score both runners. Masaniai's RBI single later in the inning scored Christina Schallig, giving Cal a 7-0 lead. Cal would also add two more runs in the ninth.
Lauren Frankiewicz earned the win (13-11) after scattering four hits to go along with seven strikeouts in five innings of work to. Marissa Drewrey also saw some action, allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts in two innings.
