Post-Practice Interviews: Tedford
(BERKELEY) -The 2011 Cal football training camp rolled into its second week Saturday with a hard-hitting practice in full pads that was highlighted by several big plays on the defensive side of the ball, including four forced fumbles and two interceptions. The offense rebounded late in the practice by getting into position for a couple of made field goals while the club was working on late-game situations. Some of the highlights are below.
Steve Williams picking off a long pass
Eight of nine stops of the offense from the two-yard line during red zone work
A four-yard sack of Allen Bridgford by Coleman Edmond on the first play of the final drive of the day
C.J. Anderson's long run down the sidelines that included a pair of late broken tackles before he was finally taken down just short of the end zone
Some of the topics head coach Jeff Tedford addressed when he spoke to reporters after the workout are below.
Overall assessment of the day's practice ...
"It was good work today, very physical, very energetic. It was really good. They came out charged up and ready to go right from the first period. It was an energetic today, enthusiastic and physical."
Brock Mansion and his current role as a non-starter ...
"He's got a great attitude. He's with the team, he prepares hard. He does a good job."
Maurice Harris ...
"I see a young guy who is picking it up nicely, not perfect by any means but picking it up nicely. He's making some nice catches. He has very, very good hands. He's a big receiver with body control. He's doing a nice job."
Weather conditions ...
"This is awesome. It doesn't get any better than this, does it? It's awesome, just enough heat, sun, it's great."
Running Backs ...
"We need to improve, too many balls on the ground today. The defense was popping them, separated the ball from the backs a couple of times and we can't have that, obviously. Those young backs that are just getting in there, ball security is the number one thing. That's what happens with every young back. Every young back, they get whacked a few times and the ball comes out until they learn how important it is."
Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson ...
"Covaughn's had a real nice camp. Covaughn came back in shape ready to go. We had a goal line play the other day one-on-one with him and [Mychal] Kendricks, where he ran right though him. He got his pads down, which has been the thing about Covaughn to make sure he's physical enough, but he put his pads down and did a great job. As of right now, he would be the second guy and the third guy is still up for grabs."
Mitchell Schwartz ...
"Schwartz played today, he played well."
