BERKELEY - Five affiliates of the Cal men's golf program will be participating in sectional qualifying Monday for the 2012 U.S. Open to be played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco from June 14-17. Current Cal golfer Max Homa will attempt to qualify Monday as an amateur and be joined by former Golden Bears and current professionals James Hahn, Michael Jensen, John Murphy and Charlie Wi.

Homa, Hahn and Jensen will be among 129 competitors playing for six U.S. Open spots at the Lake Merced Golf Club/TPC Harding Park site in Daly City, while Murphy will be among 73 players vying for four U.S. Open entries at the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., and Wi among 132 for a still undetermined number of spots at the Scioto Country Club/OSU Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.

Homa, who will tee off at 7:45 a.m. PT on Lake Merced Country Club's 10th hole, was a junior on the Cal team that reached the semifinals of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship that concluded Sunday. Homa tied for ninth as Cal's top golfer in the stroke play portion of the event and won one of the two matches he played during subsequent match play. His tie for ninth was the second-best finish ever by a Cal golfer at the NCAA Championship as was the team's tie for third. Homa led Cal with a 71.2 stroke average in 2011-12 and was 6-3 in the match play, sharing team MVP honors along with Brandon Hagy and Michael Kim. All three members of the trio were also second-team All-Pac-12 and Division I PING All-West Region honorees.

Hahn, who picked up his first career win on the Nationwide Tour on Sunday when he beat Scott Parel on the second playoff hole at The Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh, N.C., will fly back to the Bay Area to start his day at the 10th hole at Lake Merced at 7:00 a.m. PT. Hahn played golf at Cal in 2000-01. He is currently fifth on the Money List for the Nationwide Tour in 2012.

Jensen, who played in the Gateway Tour's Arizona Series earlier this season, begins at Harding Park's 10th hole at 7:45 a.m. PT. Jensen was a member of the Cal golf team from 2004-09, earning honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors on two occasions in 2004-05 and 2006-07. He tied for seventh at the 2005 Pac-10 Championship.

Murphy will be the first of the five to start at 7:20 a.m. ET from the first tee of the Canoe Brooke Country Club - North Course. He played at Cal from 2008-11 after coming to Berkeley as a transfer following two seasons at Old Dominion. Murphy was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 choice as a junior in 2008-09 and posted an impressive fifth-place showing at the 2009 Pac-10 Championship.

Wi has finished second five times on the PGA Tour, most recently at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February. He was a first-team All-American in 1994-95 and the 1995 Pac-10 individual champion while at Cal. Wi will tee off from the OSU Scarlet Course at 8:40 a.m. ET.

Sectional qualifying is the final stage before U.S. Open hopefuls get to the championship itself. The USGA offers 13 sectional sites - 11 in the U.S. that will take place Monday and two overseas in Japan and England that have previously taken place. Nearly 1,000 golfers will compete Monday at one of the 11 U.S. sites in a one-day 36-hole event at the sectional qualifying level for the approximately 75 remaining available spots in the U.S. Open.
