Utilizing 24 different players, the No. 2-ranked Cal men's water polo team defeated No. 16-ranked Santa Clara, 11-5, Sunday in a non-conference match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears, led by three goals apiece from sophomore Scott Cruikshank and senior Michael Sharf, improved to 20-2 overall, while the Broncos dropped to 15-9.
Cal set the contest's tone early by outscoring Santa Clara, 5-2, in the first period. Cruikshank tallied the matches' first goal with 7:20 left in the first period. The Broncos actually took a 2-1 lead on back-to-back goals by Mike Sorgenfrei and Tommy Kelly at 6:38 and 5:48, respectively. A skip shot by junior Frank Reynolds with 5:15 in the first period tied the game, 2-2, for Cal, and then Sharf followed with goal at 3:54 and 2:32, and Cruikshank added another goal with 30 seconds in the opening period for the 5-2 advantage.
Other scorers for the Bears included two goals for junior captain Trent Calder, and goals by sophomore Spencer Warden and redshirt freshman Adam Cline. Redshirt freshman goalie Jacob McIntosh had nine saves for Cal. Santa Clara's Robert Callahan had nine saves for the Broncos.
Cal will next host No. 6-ranked UC Irvine in an MPSF league match on Friday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears will then travel to No. 9 UC Santa Barbara for a conference match on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 12 p.m.
