LAS VEGAS - The tenth-ranked California Golden Bear softball team struggled to find its offense and as a result lost to Mississippi State, 9-0 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV on Friday morning.

The setback dropped the Bears, who managed just one hit, to 4-2 on the season. Cal resumes play with two games tomorrow vs. Colorado State at 9 a.m. and No. 8-ranked Northwestern at Noon.

Mississippi State (5-1) seized momentum early in the second inning when Jessie Bailey's single to right field plated pinch runner Rachel Hurley from third base to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. MSU added to its lead later in the frame when Michelle Kinney drove in Bailey on a single thru the left side giving Mississippi State a 2-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs widened their lead in the fifth inning with three more runs. Sammie Jo Bailey delivered for MSU when she connected for an RBI single off freshman Marissa Drewrey, who relieved starter, Brittany LaRosa to begin the inning, putting MSU up 3-0. Mississippi State tacked on two more runs to close out the inning with a 5-0 lead.

MSU went on to score four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning resulting in a mercy rule to end the contest.

LaRosa (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season after allowing two runs on six hits in four innings of work. Alex Sutton produced the lone hit for the Bears.

Stephanie Comeaux picked up her first win of the season for the Bulldogs after shutting down a Cal offense that had scored 25 runs in five games.
