Berkeley, Calif. - With a few days left before their season opener, the California softball team had one last day to bask in preseason glory. The Golden Bears were ranked third in the preseason USA Today / NFCA Poll, the final poll to be released before the start of the season.
No. 3 Cal (629 points) was the only team to receive a first-place vote besides No. 1 UCLA (674 points). The Bears were edged out by No. 2 Arizona (632 points). If the top three spots of these rankings look familiar that's because they are identical to those in the Pac-10 preseason poll released earlier this week.
No. 4 Oklahoma (535 points) and No. 5 Washington (515 points) round out the top five, with four of those teams hailing from the Pac-10.
Cal was down one spot in the poll from where they finished last season at No. 2, as national championship runner-up.
In the ESPN / USA Softball poll released earlier this month, the Golden Bears received a No. 2 ranking behind No. 1 UCLA.
