Recap |  Final Stats

Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb

"This was our 20th win. Today was really indicative of why we got to that point. We have so much depth and versatility. Oregon State came out and they were fired up. They had a great first half and we had to stick with it, pound the ball inside, be really aggressive and then play inside-out. It was really fun to see Foo step up and knock down shots and us be able to get some separation. Obviously they made it a little close down the stretch with their three-point shooting, but our poise down the stretch was really big. I am just very happy for our players."

On the three point shooting

"We went on a stretch where we were in a good rhythm offensively. They tried to shut down our inside. We had really good ball movement and Foo knocked down a couple. We got some separation and gave ourselves a 15-point lead. Then Oregon State started going to their last-second situation plan and they have great three-point shooters. At one point, we subbed in five guards. We were switching everything, making it tougher. We were saying no fouls, no threes, and Ali Gibson hit I believe three fairly consecutively. One she had Talia and Eliza in her face. Then we switched and she hit one from about 27 feet. The next one we got up even higher and she hit one more so obviously that is on us. We need to make sure that we get out. I credit them for being able to do a good job with that."

On the reason for pressing

"Our advantage over Oregon State is our athleticism and the pace we can play at. They do a tremendous job and I can't say enough about them, but they are a system team and they run their stuff, so we wanted to disrupt their game and make it full court. We told our point guards and our two guards, Eliza and Boyd and Layshia, that group to pick up full court on any missed basket and any time we made a basket we were going into our silver press, trying to turn it over a little bit. I thought it got the pace of the game going a certain way. We gave up some easy baskets and we got some steals. At some point, it felt the rhythm was such that we could go back to a straight man-to-man defense and we got stops that way."

On the play of Layshia Clarendon

"Our coaching staff talked to Layshia at the beginning of Pac-12 play. Even though we are such a balanced team, there is a time when you need that scoring guard to step up and make big shots. She has just been so great about understanding when to feed the post, when to get others involved, and when it is time for her to make a play, to get her own shot or go to her strengths. When people sag on the posts, I think Layshia and the team now has confidence that someone is going to step up and knock down a shot. What Layshia does a little differently than everyone else is she can catch and shoot the three. And what it allows me to do, because of her ball-handling ability, is to move Boyd or Eliza off the point because they are such dangerous penetrators from the wing and put Layshia back in the point guard spot and make them pay when they sag."

On getting to 20 wins

"I am so excited for our players. When I got the job in the spring, I met with each of them individually. To a person, they talked about winning and celebrating and feeling good about their teammates. And I said, that is what we all want and we also have to get through the work to get there. For me, this team is about winning. Sometimes people play more than others. We have a lot of depth. They are focused on Cal basketball and being a special team. And our fans feel it. I am really happy for them to be able to celebrate that. And there is a lot more regular season left to go. I am just proud of this group."
