SAN DIEGO - Seventh-seeded California upended No. 6 seed Arizona State, 11-8, on the third day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament. The Golden Bears improve to 18-10, while the Sun Devils fall to 21-12.
In a tightly played first quarter, ASU and Cal came out tied at 3-3 after eight minutes of action. The Bears then used a five-goal second period to pull ahead by an 8-4 margin at the break. With a four-goal advantage, California never looked back, only allowing ASU to come within two goals the rest of the way. Leading 9-7 with 7:26 left in the game, the Bears scored two unanswered goals to seal the win.
Molly Hayes led Cal with five goals, while Arizona State's Kelly Phelps matched the Bears' leading scorer with five tallies of her own. Cal will play again tomorrow against No. 4 seed and tournament host San Diego State at 1:30 p.m. in the fifth-place game.
