Berkeley -

The California football team concluded its first week of practice in Memorial Stadium with a 30-period session in pads on Sunday.

"After a week of camp, my assessment is that there is a lot of speed and a lot of skill on the field," said head coach Jeff Tedford. "We're making a lot of progress with our guys as we try to figure out our depth. I feel good about the way we're practicing and our focus in camp."

Cal addressed the running game in the early 11-on-11 tutorials, as Will Ta'ufo'ou, Justin Forsett, Tracy Slocum, Jahvid Best and Shane Vereen all garnered carries.

The Bears also used the running back corps in pass protection drills against the line backing unit. The one-on-one drills also featured the defensive backs vs. the wide receivers, which included DeSean Jackson making a nifty one-handed grab around the defender.

Other 11-on-11 highlights included a pair of long receptions by LaReylle Cunningham (from Kevin Riley) and Drew Glover from Bryan Van Meter.

Cal received defensive contributions from Anthony Felder (a big run-stuffing hit in the 11-on-11s), Zack Follett (fumble recovery) and Charles Johnson (interception).

Cal resumes practice tomorrow with double-day session in Memorial Stadium. As a reminder ALL PRACTICES ARE CLOSED to the PUBLIC.

California opens the 2007 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, hosting Tennessee at Memorial Stadium in a 5 p.m. contest. Single-game tickets are also available for all games except Tennessee, USC and Stanford. Season tickets are currently available by visiting www.CalBears.com or by calling 1-800-GO-BEARS.
