No. 9 Cal ties Cal State Northridge

BERKELEY - The California men's soccer team (3-0-1) tied Cal State Northridge (3-0-1) Sunday afternoon to conclude the ninth annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears won the tournament for the second straight year.

Senior forward Alec de Mattos put the Matadors ahead, 1-0, in the 61st minute. Freshman midfielder Devin Deldo assisted on the play by shaking off the Cal defender in the right corner and crossing the ball to Mattos.

Cal answered in the 76th minute to tie the score 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano dribbled down the right side of the field and sank the ball in the net from six yards back.

In an exciting second overtime Cal had three opportunities to try and come out with the win. Senior forward Calen Carr took a shot that bounced off the post in the 106th minute. Thirty seconds later sophomore midfielder Javier Hil took a shot that was saved by the Matadors goalkeeper, Kevin Guppy. In the 107th minute senior midfielder Pieter Berger had one last opportunity but fell short.

Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg recorded eight saves for the Bears Sunday, totaling 12 for the tournament.

Up next for the Bears is the Bay Area Classic. Cal faces San Francisco on the road, Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. and returns home on Sunday, Sept. 18, to face No. 6 (according to Soccer America) Santa Clara at Edwards Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

Stanford (1-2-1) defeated Vanderbilt (2-2), 2-0, to start the day. Sophomore midfielder Marcus Ryan scored the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute off a penalty kick. Ryan then assisted junior midfielder Galen Thompson on Stanford's insurance goal in the 54th minute.

11 Players make All-Tournament Team, Wahl earns MVP

The Bears won the tournament and placed four seniors on the All-Tournament team with defender Tyson Wahl earning the tournament MVP. Other Cal players included Eric Kronberg, Calen Carr, and Pieter Berger.

Cal State Northridge came in second, with three players on the team, including goalkeeper Kevin Guppy, defender Matt Tracy and forward Willie Sims.

Stanford came in third, with midfielders Michael Brown and Marcus Ryan earning All-Tournament.

Vanderbilt placed fourth with midfielder Brian Mascarenhas and goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni earning All-Tournament honors.
