SAN DIEGO, CA - The No. 3 ranked University of California women's water polo team (11-4, 3-2) was upset by No. 5 ranked San Diego State (12-7, 1-2), 7-5, Friday in San Diego.
San Diego State jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period and never looked back on the way to the 7-5 win. Cal got within 3-2 at halftime, but then the Aztecs went on a 2-0 run in the third period. The Bears mounted a little bit on a comeback by outscoring San Diego State, 3-2, in the final period.
"We played poorly," said Cal assistant coach Steve Doten. "We came back a little bit in the fourth period, but we really never got it together. They (San Diego State) scored all their goals on natural goals and we didn't convert on any of our 6-on-5 advantages. We didn't play well until the fourth quarter, but then it was too late. The team wasn't mentally ready. Now, we just need to regroup for next week."
Senior captain Erin Kelley and junior Heather Petri scored two goals apiece for the Bears. Senior Melanie vonHartitzsch added another goal and goalie Evi Schueller had five saves. San Diego State was led by six goals from junior Larisa Baltgalvis.
The Bears will next host Indiana Mar. 15 at 4 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex on the Cal campus.
