Cal Hosts Bay Area Pro-Am in Final Exhibition

BERKELEY, Calif. - California plays its final exhibition game in preparation for the start of the 2004-05 season against the Bay Area Pro-Am Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.

The Bay Area Pro-Am lost to Nevada, 66-50, Nov. 6 in Reno, Nev. The Pro-Am shot 31.3 percent from the floor and committed 28 turnovers. Molly Shanley, who competed at San Francisco, led the Pro-Am with 10 points. Eight of the 10 members of the team graduated from West Coast schools, including Danielle Golay, who played at USC. Cal defeated the Bay Area team, 81-72, in its exhibition opener last season.

The Golden Bears are coming off a 69-36 victory over Baden Sports in their first exhibition game Nov. 3. Cal freshman center Jessica Lawson led all scorers with 17 points and added five rebounds, two blocks and four steals in only 15 minutes of playing time. Senior center Khadijah Coakley and freshman forward Krista Foster each posted double-doubles off the bench. Coakley, a product of San Diego, Calif., contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Foster, from Fair Oaks, Calif., had 10 points and 11 boards.

The Bears forced Baden Sports into 35 turnovers. Sophomore guard Sarah Pool (Central Point, OR), who missed the 2003-04 season with a back injury, posted six of Cal's 21 steals on the day.

Alicia Heathcote led Baden with 11 points. Laura Ingham corralled 11 rebounds, but Cal maintained a 60-33 rebounding edge.

Cal returns nine letterwinners and three starters from last year's squad which posted a 12-17 overall record after jumping out to an 8-2 start, its best opening to a season in 11 years. The returning starters are the three senior captains - forwards Leigh Gregory (11.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Kiki Williams (6.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg), and guard Kristin Iwanaga (6.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg).

Saturday, Cal hosts the annual Meet the Bears gathering from 8 a.m.-noon at Haas Pavilion. The festivities include pizza for lunch, watching the Bears practice, a fundamental skills clinic for students 12th grade and under and an autograph/picture session. Cal will practice from 8-10:30 a.m.

Cal hosts Navy Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. in its season opener. The Midshipmen open their season at Cal Poly Nov. 19.
