BERKELEY - California is ranked No. 21 in the WBCA-USA Today-ESPN Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was announced today. The Golden Bears have been ranked between Nos. 12-25 in four other preseason polls which have been released since September.
The Bears are the third highest ranked of six Pac-10 teams in the coaches' poll. Stanford is tabbed fourth in the poll, and Arizona State is listed 12th. USC is No. 22, while UCLA is No. 23 and Washington is slated No. 25.
Maryland, the defending NCAA champion, holds the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll.
Cal opened the 2006-07 season with an 81-55 exhibition victory over Melbourne Roos Oct. 31 at Haas Pavilion. Sophomores Ashley Walker and Alexis Gray-Lawson paced the Bears with 25 points each. Cal hosts Love and Basketball Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. before opening the regular season at home against Saint Mary's Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.
In 2005-06, Cal posted an 18-12 record and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament, marking the program's first winning record and NCAA selection since 1992-93.
