BERKELEY - In the final home dual meet of 2011-12, the No. 6-ranked California men's swimming and diving team had a dominating performance in a 158-128 win over Arizona State Saturday (Jan. 21) at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal (3-1, 2-1 Pac-12) won 11 of the meet's events before swimming the final events as exhibitions. Sophomore Greg Harper and freshman Christian Higgins each won two races apiece. Harper captured the distance freestyle events with a win in the 1000 free (9:33.19) and 500 free (4:37.06), while Higgins was a top breaststroker with wins in the 100 (57.55) and 200 breast (2:05.76).

The ASU-Cal meet also represented the final home dual meet for eight Golden Bear seniors (Martin Liivamagi, Isaac Howell, Nolan Koon, Mathias Gydesen, Chris Rogers, Mark Prior, Robert Sullivan and diver Andreas Santucci). Two of the seniors won races in their final competition at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Nolan Koon captured the 100 free in a time of 45.36, and Chris Rogers won the 200 back in 1:51.77.

Other winners for Cal included freshman Will Hamilton in the 200 free (1:40.29), junior Austin Brown in the 100 back (50.62), junior Tom Shields in the 200 fly (1:46.99) and junior Dana Foster in the 50 free (20.95). Foster also swam the anchor leg of the Bears' 200 medley relay that won the meet's opening event in a time of 1:31.22 behind the swims of sophomore Marcin Tarczynski, sophomore Ryan Studebaker, Gydesen and Foster.

Today's meet provided us with a lot of good information on what we need to focus on and transition to as we approach the championship part of our season," said Cal coach David Durden. "Over the last two days (Friday versus Arizona and Saturday versus Arizona State) we took away enough information on what we need to do in order to move forward and continue to improve over the next two months."

The Bears will next travel to Pac-12 rival USC on Friday, Feb. 3 for a 2 p.m. dual meet versus the Trojans at McDonald's Swim Stadium. Cal will also swim an exhibition long course meters meet on Feb. 4 at 12 p.m. at USC.
