Bears Start Pac-10 Play With 3-0 Victory Over Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 4 California wasted no time in taking control of its Friday night clash against Oregon State in Corvallis. Ore. The Golden Bears scored in the third minute of the contest, en route to a 3-0 win in the Pac-10 opener. Cal improved to 6-1-2, 1-0 while the Beavers fell to 3-5-2, 0-1.

Junior Jacob Wilson tallied the first score of the game with a header off a cross from junior Kyle Rice. The goal was the second of the season for Wilson and Rice earned his first point of the campaign with the assist.

Another Bear who earned his second goal of the season was senior Tyler Barry. Just like his first score, Barry secured his second on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Demitrius Omphroy put the game away in the 82nd minute with his first goal of 2008, and sophomore Hector Jimenez earned his team-leading fifth assist of the season on the score. Barry earned his third point of the contest with his assist on the goal.

Junior goalkeeper Stefan Frei made three saves and notched his fourth shutout of the campaign and the 15th of his career. Frei has now posted back-to-back shutouts.

Cal outshot Oregon State, 10-8, tallying five in each half. Sophomore Andrew Wiedeman recorded three shots on goal and fellow sophomore Servando Carrasco also posted three shots.

The Bears will battle Washington on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. in Seattle, Wash. Cal returns to Edwards Stadium on Oct. 10 for a clash with UCLA.
