Men's Crew Captures Copley Cup In San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The California men's crew varsity eight, ranked third nationally, captured the Copley Cup on Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego. Cal has now won the Copley cup four out of the past five years.

"It was a great day for us," said Cal head men's crew coach Mike Teti. "We competed hard and the guys were rewarded with the victory."

The Golden Bears' raced down the course in 5:45.4 to defeat Stanford (5:56.5), Penn (6:16.3), British Columbia (6:17.2), Oregon State (6:22.0) and Gonzaga (6:28.8) in the varsity grand final.

Cal raced two boats in the second varsity eight race, taking the top two spots to capture the Sharp Cabrillo Cup. The first boat completed the course in 5:52.78 with the second Cal boat recording a time of 6:07.36. Oregon State (6:13.96) placed third with British Columbia (6:15.44) coming in fourth, Gonzaga (6:16.56) placing fifth and Stanford (6:16.58) finishing sixth.

The Bears also captured the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup, winning the Novice eight with a time of 6:06.60. Stanford (6:17.21) placed second, followed by OCC (6;21.70), Oregon State (6:24.31), Gonzaga (6:26.10) and UCSB (6:44.15).

The California Rowing Club captured the open eight with a time of 5:55.69, edging a Cal boat by less than five seconds with a time of 6:00.32.

"It was a great start, but we have some work to do," Teti said. "We will be back training on Tuesday and continue to try and improve."
