BERKELEY, CALIF. - Nine different players scored, including a team-high three goals from redshirt freshman Brian Dudley, as the No. 1-ranked Cal men's water polo team defeated UC Santa Cruz, 15-3, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 24-2 overall, while the Banana Slugs fell to 7-18.
In a match in which 20 different Cal players saw action, the Bears outscored UC Santa Cruz, 7-1, in the first period and coasted to the win. Other multiple scorers beside Dudley were freshman Zachary White, junior Mike Ferrif, sophomore Mike Sample and junior Kenny Waldthaler with two goals apiece. Senior goalie Alex Weisbecker finished with eight saves in three quarters of action. Another top player for the Bears was redshirt freshman Sandy French, who had a goal and added a team-high four steals and three assists on the day.
Cal will next travel to Stanford for the final conference match of the season, Friday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Avery Aquatic Center on the Stanford campus. One of the Bears' two losses this season came against the Cardinal when Cal fell, 10-9 in sudden-death overtime, in the semifinals of the SoCal Tournament, Oct. 13 in Irvine. The Bears' next home action is when they host the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 23-25 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
