LOS ANGELES - California women's tennis senior Susie Babos moved two steps closer to successfully defending her 2006 All-American Championship crown today by defeating each of her opponents in straight sets. The 2007 Riviera ITA Women's Tennis All-American Championships are presented by Fila and will run until Sunday when champions in both singles and doubles competition are crowned.
After earning an automatic qualification into the main draw, Babos defeated William & Mary's Ragini Acharya on Thursday to advance to the second round. Facing Florida's Megan Alexander, Babos wasted no time getting into a groove by dispatching of her opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In the third round of play, Babos was matched up with Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas. Although Miseviciute put up more of a fight, Babos was still able to walk away after two sets, defeating her SEC opponent 6-4, 6-4.
Babos will play in the singles main draw semifinal on Saturday against Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell. McDowell upset seventh-seeded Georgia Rose of Northwestern in the first round to move into the second round but needed three sets, winning the final set 7-6 to advance past Miami's Laura Vallverdu for the right to face Babos in the semifinal. The winner of tomorrow's match will meet the winner of Ani Mijacika (Clemson) and Maya Johansson (Georgia Tech) to decide 2007's champion.
