Ky Ebright Honored at Cal Crew Alumni Day

BERKELEY - Despite the poor weather, it was a great day for California crew on Saturday at the 2012 Alumni Day. Highlighting the day's events were the men's freshmen winning the Class Day Race against the other three classes and the unveiling of the new Ky Ebright statue.

The T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center was packed with current and former Cal men's and women's rowers, friends and family. While the day was dedicated to Ebright, it was also a day to celebrate the first sport at Cal and one of the most successful.

The day began with the men's freshman boat beating the other three classes to the finish line in Class Day Race. The Golden Bear coaching staff has been impressed and excited about the incoming Bears all preseason, and the freshmen proved why on Saturday.

Following the race, everyone was invited into the boathouse where a number of speakers, including Teti and Cal Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour, spoke about Ebright's legacy and the Cal crew program. Other speakers included Ebright's grandson and some of "Ky's Guys" who put in a tremendous amount of work and dedication in making the Ebright statue a reality.

Shortly after the conclusion of the speeches, the statue was unveiled. As Cal fans clapped and cheered at the sight of the brand new statue, they were welcomed by the Cal Straw Hat band. The band came marching through the gates into the rowing center and serenaded the Cal faithful. had a chance to speak with the members of "Ky's Guys" who spoke on Saturday. Ebright was one of the finest crew coaches in the history of the sport. He coached three Cal teams (1928, '32 and '48) to Olympic gold medals, a feat not achieved by any other university. He coached at Cal for 35 years, the most by any Cal coach, and his teams captured six intercollegiate varsity titles and four junior varsity titles during his illustrious coaching career.

Both the men's and women's crews will open the 2012 season Saturday, March 31, at the San Diego Crew Classic.
