BERKELEY - Junior defensive tackle Brandon Mebane is expected to be a major force on the line for the 2005 season. The Los Angeles native collected 25 tackles, including 20 solo, last fall for the Golden Bears. As an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection, Mebane has high expectations for himself and Cal this season.
In the third of a series of player profiles during training camp, CalBears.com sat down with Mebane to get his thoughts on the upcoming season and his junior year.
What do you expect out of this year's team and yourself this season?
Brandon Mebane: "I expect a good team; we have a lot of capable players. I expect a good season. My personal goal is to make All-America, all-conference, college football awards and the Lombardi Award."
What has been your biggest highlight so far at Cal?
Mebane: "Sacking (USC quarterback) Matt Leinart. At the time, they were the No. 1 team and he was the Heisman trophy winner."
How has been being under Bob Gregory's tutelage?
Mebane: "I'm learning. We all are learning. I enjoy being under Coach Gregory. He teaches a lot. He knows how to prepare for games. He knows the opponents, their stadium and teaches you how to play your game like it's your last. He's a good guy."
What is the best part of being a student-athlete at Cal?
Mebane: "If you need help in classes or anything, all you have to do is talk to your advisor or coaches. There is a good support system for student-athletes. Whenever you need, there is support."
What do you miss most about being away from Los Angeles?
Mebane: "The weather, my family and just all the guys I grew up with."
What kind of hobbies do you have?
Mebane: "I like to play video games; my favorite video game is probably Grand Theft Auto San Andreas."
Who do you look up to?
Mebane: "Jesus Christ and my parents. I pray to God before and after my games. He assures me and keeps my faith up."
What game are you most looking forward to this season?
Mebane: "I'm looking forward to all the games. I am going to play all my games like they are my last game and play every game like they are the No. 1 team. We don't want to let up on any team."
