BERKELEY - Paul Shea, an Oregon-based business executive, has been named the University of California's director of football operations, Cal head football coach Jeff Tedford announced today.
Shea, 52, will provide support to Tedford and the football program in several areas. The New York City native will oversee team travel, training camp, academic eligibility and support, financial aid, career placement and other student services, speaking engagements, supervision of administrative staff, and general assistance to the head coach.
"Paul and I have been personal friends for a number of years," said Tedford. "Due to his extensive business background, I felt he was the ideal choice for this very important position. To be a successful head coach for a major football college, it's imperative to delegate certain areas of responsibility to someone like Paul."
Born in Yonkers, N.Y. and raised in the Inwood section of Upper Manhattan, Shea attended St. Joseph's Prep in Barrytown, N.Y. and graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. He later earned a history degree from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minn. in 1972.
Four years later in 1976, Shea launched two businesses which would both operate successfully for nearly 25 years. He began to establish a series of automotive-related enterprises in San Diego that year and started Shea Properties, a commercial and residential real estate company with holdings in both the San Diego and Seattle areas.
Shea, who most recently has resided in Sisters, Ore., sold his automotive concerns last year, while he continues to serve as president of Shea Properties.
He and his wife, Mary, have two grown daughters, Kelly and Erin.
