SAN DIEGO - Omid Jalali scored his second goal as a Golden Bear to tie San Diego State, 1-1, in the 41st minute, but California wound up losing to the host Aztecs, 2-1, on Thursday night at the SDSU SportsDeck. Cal's record fell to 8-6-2 (3-4-1 in the Pac-12), while San Diego State improved to 7-7-3 (1-5-2 Pac-12).
"We played pretty well tonight and couldn't catch a break," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "It was a good game for both teams overall."
Jalali, a sophomore midfielder, scored his first goal as a Bear last season in another 2-1 loss at San Diego State.
In tonight's match, San Diego State took a 1-0 lead at 9:16, as Ata Ozbay scored from five yards away off of a Kevin Bick assist.
At 40:19, with junior defender Ryan Neil assisting, Jalali scored from eight yards out to knot the match at one goal apiece. The teams took the tie into halftime.
Blake Wise scored the gamewinner for the Aztecs, blasting a shot from 25 yards that deflected off of a Bear and into the net at 53:10 to give SDSU the 2-1 lead.
Cal sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Peach made two saves in 90 minutes, while Tim Peitsch made four saves for SDSU.
The Aztecs outshot Cal, 13-12, though the Bears had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal returns to the pitch on Sunday, Nov. 4, when the Bears battle No. 4/5 UCLA in Los Angeles in the penultimate game of the regular season.
