BERKELEY - Junior forward Harper Kamp and junior guard Jorge Gutierrez have been named to the Pac-10 All-Academic second team as announced Monday by the conference. Kamp, an American studies major, boasted a GPA of 3.1, while Gutierrez, an interdisciplinary studies major, earned a 3.02 GPA.
This marks the 15th and 16th times a Golden Bear has earned mention on the first- or second-team units since 2001, and the fourth and fifth in the past three years. Gutierrez also made the all-academic second team a year ago.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Gutierrez, an All-Pac-10 first-team selection and member of the USBWA All-District team, earned Pac-10 All-Defensive honors for the second straight time in 2011. He has provided the spark for the Bears all season. Cal's leading scorer at 14.6 ppg, Gutierrez reached double figures in scoring in 25 of the 33 games this season, including a streak of 10 in a row at one point. In Cal's overtime victory over UCLA on Feb. 20, Gutierrez totaled a career-best 34 points, tallying nine of those 34 points in the overtime period. He finished the season with 54 steals, which ranks seventh on the school's single-season list.
Kamp, a member of the All-Pac-10 and NABC all-district second teams, was Cal's steady presence in the front court all season. After missing the 2009-10 campaign with a knee injury, Kamp has been a key component to the Bear's success in 2010-11. He has six 20-point outings to his credit. He also posted a career-best 33 points in the triple-overtime thriller against Arizona on Feb. 5, part of his second career double-double (personal-best 10 rebounds). Kamp also helped remarkably in the rebounding department, finishing the year at 5.6 rpg. He has also been sound from the charity stripe, boasting a season percentage of 81.6.
