Southern Miss starting quarterback Dustin Almond threw for 304 yards tonight, setting a career-high in passing yards. Almond's previous high was 256, coming at USF 10/12/02.
Almond's 304 passing yards were the most by a Southern Miss quarterback, since Jeff Kelly threw for 400 yards against Tulane, Nov. 17, 2001.
Anthony Perine scored his first touchdown of the season in the first quarter, on a 40-yard fleaflicker play from Dustin Almond. It was the second career touchdown for Perine.
Perine finished with four catches for 101 yards, marking a career-high in receiving yards for him. It was also the second 100-yard receiving game of the season by a Southern Miss receiver, the first coming by Antwon Courington (112 yards) against TCU, 11/20/04.
Cal running back J.J. Arrington finished with 261 rushing yards tonight, the most by any running back against Southern Miss. The previous high was 231, set by Houston's Antowain Smith, 11/9/96. It was also an opponent M.M. Roberts Stadium opponent record since 1976, breaking the previous high of 168, set by Irving Spikes of Louisiana-Monroe in 1993.
Cal's Wendell Hunter scored on a defensive extra point in the fourth quarter, marking the first time an opponent has scored on a defensive extra point, since Samford's Corey O'Neal did on Oct. 22, 1994.
Darren McCaleb had a extra-point blocked, the first time Southern Miss has had an extra point blocked, since Memphis' Greg Harper did on Sept. 13, 2003.
McCaleb connected on a 33-yard field goal and has now made all 15 field goals he has attempted this season. With 15 made field goals this season, McCaleb moves into a tie for third in school history for most field goals made in a season.
Antwon Courington finished the game with five catches for 98 yards. He has now caught a pass in 21 straight games.
Trevis Coley recorded his third interception of the season in the fourth quarter. The interception was Coley's six career interception.
Southern Miss linebacker Michael Boley had one tackle for loss tonight, giving him 54.5 for his career, which moves him into third on the Southern Miss career list.
