Post game quotes: Pac-10 Tournament First Round
March 9, 2011
Head Coach Joanne Boyle
"We were really excited to get that first win in the Pac-10 Tournament. We have talked about it being a new season. We weren't happy with how the season ended, so this is a new chance for us, a new birth, and a new opportunity. I am just really proud of the kids in how they came out and played."
On the effect of playing without freshman guard Lindsay Sherbert
"She'll be back tomorrow. I think the team rallied around being here at the Pac-10 Tournament. Not having her, our depth issues just continued with that. I think the team was motivated to get a win and just have a new season here. They took to heart some of the things we talked about in the locker room before the game, in particular the rebounding."
On what she did to shut down Washington's Kristi Kingma
"The first two games, we just needed to chase on all the screens. They set a lot of single double action for her. When you try to fake through screens and bounce over the top of them, she is a really smart player. She'll get open looks, she'll fade on you and do all of that. I thought the guards really bought into chasing on all the screens and not giving her any room when she came off the screens. They were shoulder to shoulder with her and it just made it a tougher night for her."
On the adjustments in the second half
"We were pretty aggressive on ball screens. D had to sit out for so much of the first half (because of foul trouble) so when she came back in, she got some touches. We got fouled and I thought we did a great job on the boards getting second-chance touches. I thought we did a really great job on the boards, starting late in the first half and that continued well into the second half. Layshia got to the rim a little bit more. We did a really good job hard-hedging ball screens and taking them out of their rhythm. We were a little bit more agressive in the second half."
Sophomore guard Layshia Clarendon
"I think having Sherb out, we knew it was going to take a little more for every single person. A little more rebounds. A little more defense. A little more everything, especially from our bench as everyone was going to have to play."
