BERKELEY - The University of California men's gymnastics team (7-1) concluded its 2003 regular season slate by thumping visiting Big-10 power Iowa 218.00-211.50 at Haas Pavilion. Seniors Cody Moore and Aaron Floyd were also honored in their final home meet.
Moore, a healthy scratch in the horizontal bar event, did not complete the all-around, but scored with a season best 9.550 on the pommel horse. Floyd led all competitors on the still rings, ringing up a 9.400 on the event.
Although Moore and Floyd won't compete again at Haas, sophomore Graham Ackerman gave treated Cal fans to a look at the future. Ackerman led the competition in two events, first scoring a 9.650 in the floor exercise, his signature event, before chalking up an eye-popping 9.700 on the horizontal bar.
Only one Bear gymnast, British native junior David Eaton, completed the all-around to two competitors for the Hawkeyes. Eaton bested Cameron Schick and Michael McNamara, 54.500 to 51.650 and 50.550, respectively.
Although no Hawkeye led the competition in any one event, a well-balanced roster pulled its weight for the sixth-ranked Iowa team. Junior Michael Kelly came in second on the floor with a respectable 8.950, while another junior, Matt Metzger, wowed the vocal Iowa contingent with a 9.300 on the rings.
The Bears can next be seen at the MPSF qualifier at the University of Nebraska.
