Cal Sweeps Pair from Santa Clara in Softball
February 28, 1999
BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Holly Yost tossed a one-hitter in the opener and freshman Jocelyn Forest pitched a two-hitter in the nightcap as the Cal softball team swept a doubleheader from Santa Clara Sunday on Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bears improved to 13-4 overall with the 7-0 and 4-0 victories, while Santa Clara fell to 5-18. In four home games this year, Cal is yet to allow a run, outscoring its opponents, 27-0.
In the first game, the Bears scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by freshman third baseman Candace Harper. Cal added a run in the second on when center fielder Amber Phillips tripled home shortstop Katie May, who had doubled. Of the Bears 11 hits in the game, five went for extra bases.
Yost, who stayed perfect on the year at 5-0, allowed only a second-inning single to Kim Maynard. Yost struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
In the second game, Cal broke on top on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Lisa Iancin in the first inning. The Bears completed their scoring in the third inning on an RBI single by first baseman Kirsten Drake and a two-run homer by Iancin, her third of the season.
Forest struck out nine as she improved her record to 4-2 on the year.
"After losing two games Saturday at Pacific, I felt we were able to get back to track today," Cal head coach Diane Ninemire said. "We did a much better job of executing when we needed to. This should give us some confidence heading into our road trip next weekend.
Cal next plays at UC Santa Barbara March 6 and at Cal Poly SLO March 7.
