STANFORD - Pieter Berger, Calen Carr and Andrew Jacobson each scored for No. 4 California as the Golden Bears downed Alabama-Birmingham Saturday afternoon, 3-1, at the Stanford Nike Invitational. Cal is undefeated for the season, improving to 6-0-1, while UAB moves to 6-2-1.
Senior forward Pieter Berger put the Bears on the board in the 23rd minute when he scored his second goal of the season. Senior forward Calen Carr assisted on the play when he passed the ball to Berger, who took a shot from the left side and found the open net.
Four minutes later, UAB's junior forward Jerson Monteiro tied the game up, 1-1, when he scored in the 27th minute. Monteiro was assisted on the play by senior midfielders Jason McLaughlin and Leandro de Oliveira.
Carr quickly answered, scoring what turned out to be the game winning goal, when he put the Bears up 2-1 in the 34th minute. Junior midfielder Steve Purdy assisted on the play when he threw the ball in from the left side of the field. Carr found the open look and headed the ball into the net, recording his fourth game-winning goal of the season.
Junior midfielder Andrew Jacobson came up big for the Bears in the second half when he scored in the 46th minute. Junior midfielder Eric Ebert passed the ball to Jacobson, who was centered on the goal from 15 yards out and sank the ball past UAB's goalkeeper, A.J. Robles. Jacobson ensured Cal's sixth consecutive win for the season and recorded the first goal of his career.
UAB's goalkeeper was put to the test by the Bears, recording nine saves. Cal out shot the Blazers 19-5, with Carr tabbing seven shots.
The Bears face Army (1-6) on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 4:30 p.m. at Maloney Field to conclude the Stanford Nike Invitational.
