No. 2 California falls to No. 1 Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. - The California Golden Bears lost two of three races against No. 1 Washington in dual competition, Saturday morning on Montlake Cut in Seattle, Wash. The freshman eight's victory was the boats fifth consecutive victory over the Huskies, the most ever by a California crew.

Cal's freshman eight defeated Washington for a fifth consecutive year

The California freshman eight started strong, posting a 1.64 second lead after just 500 meters. Washington tried to mount a comeback, but couldn't succeed pulling within a second at the 1500 meter mark, but eventually losing by a full two seconds. This victory marked the varsity eight's fifth consecutive victory over the huskies. Prior to this run, Cal had never put more than two wins back to back in dual racing against Washington.

Washington started out ahead in the second varsity eight race, holding a .56 second lead after 500 meters. The Bears fought back capturing a .7 second lead at the halfway marker and holding onto this lead for another 500 meters. In the final 500 meter portion the Huskies outraced Cal, finishing 1.9 seconds ahead of the Bears.

The Huskies dominated the varsity eight race, capturing an early lead and never letting up. Washington had a two second lead at the 500 meter mark, and this margin never decreased. The Bears finished almost four seconds behind Washington.

The Bears will next race in the Pac-10 championships May 13, 2007, on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
