SALINAS, Calif. - No. 4 California placed third Wednesday at the Spartan Invitational at Corral de Tierra Country Club but would probably have finished higher if one of its golfers didn't have to withdraw. The Golden Bears posted a plus-18 882 after today's score of 300 in which all four scores counted.
Cal sophomore Sofie Andersson began the day in second place at three-under 141, but she wasn't able to complete today's round due to back pain, which she has been battling since the fall.
No. 2 UCLA won the 17-team tournament at minus-six 858, while No. 24 UNLV finished second at 879. Host San Jose State ended in ninth at 919.
The Bruins' Charlotte Mayorkas claimed the individual crown at minus-five 211, one shot ahead of her teammate, Krystal Shearer. Cal senior Sarah Huarte took third at 213 after firing a final round of 70. Senior Anna Temple also had a strong outing for the Bears, placing 17th at 223 with today's round of 76.
Cal sophomore Sophia Sheridan tied for 29th at 229 following a 78 today, and senior Claire Dury carded a 76 to tie for 36th at 230. Andersson had carded a 70 and 71 in the first two rounds, respectively, so there was a strong possibility that Sheridan's final round of 78 would have been dropped.
The Bears take next week off before competing at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational March 21-23 in Austin, Texas.
